Lis Simon Bride Avery

The summer before college 2017 is when two volunteers crossed path at a middle school summer camp. Avery’s parents were the ones in charge, but for some reason, Landon, her now husband, kept messaging her about the camp information. “Little did I know that he was trying to get to know me!” The two spent the entire week-long camp getting to know each other and (eventually) dated before the summer was over. Landon attended college in a small town in the middle-of-nowhere, Iowa, and Avery went to the University of Missouri-Columbia. The couple spent the entirety of their bachelor’s degrees driving the backroads of Missouri to see each other on the weekends; “our relationship grew through long distance”. They graduated in 2021 and finally reunited in the KC area – “Long distance isn’t tough if you choose each other every day”.

The couple’s very first “date” was a walk around Remembrance Lake in Blue Springs, MO. Two teenagers, fresh out of high school, walking around a lake with shaky hands and long awkward pauses once small talk ran out. Landon kept switching the water bottle to whichever hand was on the outside of them in hopes they would hold hands, but never did because they were so nervous.
Four years later, Landon stopped at the same parking lot where he met Avery for their first date. They walked along the trail and she totally knew he was going to propose that day, “so I was wearing heels on this hike – and stumble onto an outlook of the lake”. The outlook had a picnic blanket surrounded by vases with yellow (Avery’s favourite colour) and white flowers. Their friend, the photographer, was not very well hidden by a bush and “I could hear her snapping camera as I walked onto the blanket”. From that very moment, Landon asked Avery “to go on every adventure with him for the rest of our lives, and I said yes!”

“It was absolutely amazing!” Avery went to Something White Bridal Boutique in downtown Kansas City. The shop allows you to walk around the store to pick a few dresses of your own before they bring out their picks. Avery requested a floral lace, flutter sleeves, and would cry if it had pockets. She brought her sister, best friend, future mother-in-law, and best friend’s mom as her entourage. They happen to be in front of the “Marisol” dress that was hung on a mannequin at the store front. She tried on about four or five dresses – all top contenders but didn’t have “the one” feeling. Her sister asked for the sales representative to take the mannequin dress down. As Cam, the wonderful bridal stylist, was letting Avery step into ‘Marisol’, she stared at herself in the mirror and her stomach dropped to her toes. “This was the feeling I was waiting for! I stepped onto the pedestal and tears were pouring out. To fully achieve her perfect dream dress, they added floral lace and flutter sleeves from ‘Laura’ that she tried on before. “The best part – pockets! It was a great experience.”

Avery described the venue as an outdoor reception in nowhere, Kansas. Large oak trees towered above the long wooden tables, campfires going with a s’mores station, a garden and greenhouse to walk around, and has a custom popcorn and a waffle food truck – “The reception was light and fun”.
The theme of the wedding was jokingly titled “Terracotta Twilight” as Avery wanted to be surrounded in flowers, just like Bella was in Breaking Dawn pt. 1, with accents of warm terracotta in the details.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM YOUR SPECIAL DAY
The couple did two special things to commemorate their special day:
Avery is a kindergarten teacher and love her kids dearly. “I wish they could be a part of our special day somehow! I had them write about “What is love” and draw a picture. They had brightened my day and it felt like they were there with me!
The couple had “song vows” and each picked a song and had their friends sing as their vow to each other. “My husband chose ‘The Wedding Song’ by Matthew Mole and I chose ‘What I’ve Been Looking For’ by Ryan and Sharpay version from High School Musical (what an amazing taste!). It was a sweet moment to listen to our own words couldn’t say in a short vow. I also love High School Musical, and this was the perfect way to incorporate my childhood favourites!” (Avery is an intellectual, we stan a queen with taste!)
The ceremony, without a doubt, stands as one of their favourite moments – “it was a beautiful moment to just look into my husband’s eyes and take a deep breath. This is the reason why we are here – take away the flowers, smores, and High School Musical. I was here to make a commitment to this dorky kid I met five years ago. That was what mattered. The ceremony was everything I wanted it to be and more!”
